PARENTS' ASSOCIATON

The Parents' Association meets monthly.  The Association represents parents' concerns to the Principal at these meetings and explores ways in which the school can be made a better place for our students.

The St Tiernan’s Parents’ Association kindly donated €1,000 towards re-stocking and replacing existing books in the School Library.  Thanks to their involvement, the Library has many new books for research and reading.  The Association presented a new piano to the Music Department, which is much appreciated by our music teachers.  This will greatly enhance the teaching of music in the school and will be a wonderful asset for public performances.

The Parents' Association Committee works tirelessly on behalf of parents, students and the entire school community and they deserve the wholehearted support of all the parent body.

Parents' Association News

Picture
St Tiernan’s Parents' Association was originally founded in 1980, after the opening of the school that year.  We meet approx every 6/8 weeks during the school term and liaise closely with the Principal, Mr Declan Hughes.
Our objectives are set out in our constitution and in summary the association:
•    Provides an opportunity for parents to become involved in matters relating to the development of the school/parent
•    Promotes the well-being and interests of the pupils of the school
•    Informs and consults parents regarding school plans and activities - however, the Association does not involve itself in matters relating to the internal administration of the school
•    Assisting in fundraising for essential school developments
•    Fosters good relations between the parents, teachers, students and the school authorities
•    We also have two representatives on the Board of Management who can bring any matters that are of concern of the Parents' Association or any parent direct to the Board at their monthly meeting.
Now you probably wonder what we have been doing every month over the last year.  We meet and discuss topics of issue, hear from the Principal, students and teachers.  We’ve been very busy over the last year and thought you might like to see what kind of items have been coming up at our meetings and some of the decisions we made:
•    Sr Eileen kept us up-dated on the students fundraising progress for a defibulator via the collection of 250 old mobile phones.   The full training costs €500, which will be completed before the start of the new school year in Sept.  This was funded by the Parents Association.
•    Donated the cost of school signage on the outside of the hall and reception.
•    Donated €700 towards the Remembrance Stone in the newly landscaped remembrance garden.
•    Earlier this year in Feb, the students who were going to Peterhead raised approx €350 for their hostel accommodation – we donated the remaining €400 they needed
•    Students Ben & Laura joined us from the School Council to give us a talk on what they do - we gave them a boost and donated  €110 towards their own fundraising re the water cooler maintenance & football nets
•    In March we donated the €600 cost re bodhrans for transition year – we’ve heard they play very well and they look great after each student built and decorated to their own taste - the students keep them as a memento of their achievement.  Indeed they also donated one to the parents association which can be seen in the display case at reception.
The Parents’ Association donated almost €2,500 to support and fund the following school activities in the past year
•    Full training costs for defibrillator to be completed before start of school year
•    Cost of school signage on the outside of the Hall and Reception
Remembrance Stone in the newly-landscaped Remembrance Garden
Student fundraising for Scottish Exchange Programme
Student Council fundraising for Water Cooler maintenance and Football Nets
Transition Year Bodhrán Project
We hope to run a “Social Function” later during the year allowing us all to meet up – so keep tuned in - details will follow in due course – all proceeds will go towards upgrading the kitchen.
We need your support, the Parents Association is of course YOUR association and we are always open to new members – if you are interested or have any suggestions just leave your name and contact details into reception and we will advise of our next meeting.
Many thanks.
